Tanzania An economically poor country troubled by rowdy neighbours and opportunistic colonial powers, Tanzania offers some of the best wildlife spotting opportunities on the continent. Its famous parks make the many drab towns here well worth the stopover. You've just joined one of the largest, wildest animal populations in the world. Wildebeest, monkey, antelope, lion, cheetah, crocodile, gazelle, flamingo - they're all out there.

In December 2004 Tanzania was one of the countries affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami. With enough time to act on initial warnings, the Tanzanian government was able to evacuate most of its beaches before the waves hit. Although 13 people were killed, damage along the coastline was minimal. Tanzania is a developing East African nation. Tourist facilities are available in major cities and selected game parks, but limited in other areas. The legislative capital is Dodoma and the U.S. Embassy is located in Dar es Salaam.

Tanzania offers opportunities for observation of wildlife in its natural habitat. Many tour operators offer structured, safe excursions into parks and other wildlife viewing areas for close observation of flora and fauna. However, travelers should bear in mind that they, too, must play a responsible role in maintaining safety. Tourists are mauled or killed each year as a result of having relaxed their vigilance. Tourists are reminded to maintain a safe distance from animals and to remain in vehicles or other protected enclosures when venturing into game parks.
